Late 4 the Party

I found an old tape in the ashes of the burned down bar, ‘Roscoe’s Beer Barrel’. After some careful cleaning and restoration, it seems to be music of some sort. Maybe it was a demo tape Roscoe got from someone wanting a gig. I wonder if they got it? The music is followed by my transcribed lyrics:

Lyrics:

Late for the party

In the beginning,
there were three
Yes and No and Maybe-

yes and no left early
and I was late for the party.

I went to your wedding
I was late for the party
Everyone was laughing
I was late for the party
Your veil almost covered
The chip on your shoulder
Your cake was cut THREE times
But I was late for the party

You walked down the aisle
I was late for the party
Wearing half a smile
I was late for the party
Now he’s telling you stories
Under the belltower
You were almost mine
Oh, but I was late for the party

You’ve looked in every eye and every face
For another time and a place
where all of your fairy tales come true
and everybody’s waiting there for you

But I was late for the party.

Dance in the Ashes

People dream of a country life
But we just want to leave
I hear the city calling
Far horizons call to me

So twist like a gas rag!
Fly like a spark!
Spit like the smoke
Rise in the dark!

We’ll dance in the ashes
Dance the shoes right off our feet
Dance in the ashes
Underneath a burning sky

No more dreaming, baby
No more time to sleep
Dance in the ashes
of our burning dream

Glass Rainbow

In a glass rainbow
of bottles in your window
In a glass rainow,
kiss a bottle on the lips
When you finish your last bottle,
which one will you pick?

High in your blue attic
we spilt red wine on the carpet
we spun green bottles with out laughter
and tore white labels free

In a glass rainbow
of bottles in your window
in a glass rainbow
we turned water into wine
we piled up the bottles
and let the bottles shine
shine shine shine

The light turned orange and violet
We put our fingers deep inside
and leaned against the wall
with stained glass in our eyes

In a glass rainbow
of bottles in your window
a glass rainbow
broken at the edge
if you follow where it wanders
you’ll be standing on the edge
of a glass rainbow

Angel

Sacred Angel, cigarette stained,
You look so pretty in the dirty city
Making friends with Pain
But Pain is always a stranger

He’s coming round every corner
Headlights getting warmer
Sticking out like a foreigner
Pain is always a stranger

Torn up barby doll baby, wrapped in grace
You’re loving life from the other side
Flying high with Pain

Take off your ring
Strap on your wings
He will shout from above
Somebody owes him love
He will laugh at you
Until he’s blue
That is what he’ll do
Because Pain is always a stranger.
Love me like the needle
Let’s build a fire on the beach
when night falls into place
and the waves crawl back into empty space.

Love me like the needle loves me,
love me good and strong
until somebody comes and wraps us up
in the clear plastic places
we came from

and if you fall out of reach
to a place you don’t belong,
you can shake your body
like it’s all you’ve got
and dance to the sound
of a silver spoon burning
the sizzle of a world
on a spit that is turning

love me like the needle loves me!
Love me good and strong,
love me like the butterfiles
that dance across the dawn
when the chrysalis is gone

when the knot is tied
and the vein is tight
love me like the needle
who’s that boy??

Who’s that boy in the back of the class?
Who’s that boy, got him a hall pass.
who’s that boy, his feet off the ground?
who’s that boy who’s been hanging around?

he’s under the bleachers
somebody get a teacher
somebody took his shoes off again

whos that boy on a different thread?
whos that boy got ideas in his head?
whos that boy? someone cut him down
whos that boy who’s been hanging around?

he’s under the bleachers
somebody get a teacher
this place was just a cage for him
whos’s that boy just hangin’?

he’s under the bleachers
is there any kind of teacher that’s good for this?
he’s under the bleachers ]
reach on up baby
give him a kiss!

whos’s that boy in the breeze?
it could have been you
it could have been me.

Swans

Wild little wallflower
Are you burnt like me?
Even ugly ducks are dancing
But I get the third degree

We’ll waltz through the fire
And come out free
Lady, will you dance if I lead?

Concrete floor dancer
I’ve seen your lights before
They’re the lights from a green eyed girl
Who’s burning with the world

We’ll waltz through the fire
And come out free
Lady, will you dance if I lead?

If a body catch a body
Lined against a wall…
Put your foot down, pick it up
Lady, you won’t fall

Wild little wallflower,
I’ve seen your lights before
All the ugly ducks are dancing
And burning with the world

We’ll waltz through the fire
And come out free
Lady, will you dance if I lead?
Sometimes (Your Head Rules Your Heart)

Some people go out
Some people stay home
Some people don’t think
To pick up the phone
When somebody calls
To say ‘I love you!’
They hide behind walls
And forget about you

It’s been said
That we spend all our lives apart
Sometimes your head
rules your heart

You can’t reach out
You just fall back in
You feel like a lover
And talk like a friend
Until you turn blue
And while you think it through
All your feelings will fall
Away from the truth

It’s been said
That we spend all our lives apart
Sometimes your head
rules your heart

Great men are chosen
Because their feelings are frozen
They’d have you believe
That it’s best not to speak
And that Love comes and goes
And it’s a thing to control
And we’re all on our own
And we spend all our lives apart
Sometimes your head
rules your heart

It’s been said
That we spend all our lives apart
Sometimes your head
rules your heart

One String Left

A million miles past the sunset
A million cigarettes past the last breath
I’m playing at the bar called no regrets
With one string left on my guitar neck

I got one string left
So baby, hold on to me
The world is my song
So hum it along with me
Let’s get up higher
Before it’s all gone, baby
Gotta hold on to the wire
Never let go of the wire

My guitar’s only got one string
But I can bend it around and I can play anything
That’s me breaking it down
That’s me making that sound

Always on your Walls

When I first opened my eyes
At the bottom of the dawn
I caught the thread of lost days
I lost along the way
I really led myself astray

Your walls are empty and white
A twisted wire from a nail
Holds our last picture there
The sun shines at those heights
But I’m not that tall
I’m always on your walls

I could still smell the morning
And the light between sheets
Whem I left you dreaming
When lovers leave each other
Without a call
I’m always on your walls

By the time the sun gets low
Your face hates the window
Look around the empty house
If you’re purely unsure
About that picture
Leave it that way
Don’t let it fall
I’m always on your walls

Eat At Bertas

We’ll wake up together
And go down to see her
The food is so tempting
It looks like the real thing
Like that lost feeling

Tie back your hair
You can get a job down there
And eat there every day
Tie back your hair
Ain’t nothing better anyway

Nothin’ better than this!
I’m sorry I’m such a prick
but life sucks
Nothing better above
I had to fuck the whole world up
To be like us
Nothing better, you see –
It’s the world that failed not you or me
We’re just locked in these bodies
Without keys

It’s the last day of our lives
And the first day of another
I’d die a thousand times
To make breakfast last
long enough to say
Ain’t nothin’ better anyway.

Tie back your hair
Happy birthday from Bertha
Pick up your fork and knife
Don’t be afraid if it ends in a sigh
Make a wish, babe
Make it every day
Tie back your hair
Ain’t nothing better anyway.

Litany

Spend what you got
Try to make more
There’s a permanant debt
So get down on the floor

Say the magic word
Haven’t you heard?
The magic word is MONEY

I’ll wrap my lips around that litany
It’s not grace, faith, hope, or piety,
Say the magic word
Haven’t you heard?
The magic word is MONEY
Just Money

It’s written on high
And deep in my dreams
It’s folded up nice
Just like the real thing

I’ll wrap my lips around that litany
And wrap my fist around my Pennies
Say the magic word
Haven’t you heard?
The magic word is MONEY

Say one for the money and one for me
MONEY

River of money

Send me down that river of money
All the little fishes are swimming in the honey
honey

Everybody sings a song about a river
Can I jump in and come up richer?
I been bought and I been sold
There’s a million dollar bill waiting in my soul

I’m fishing for the days
That I gave away
I’ll pull up a million dollars
And rub it on my face

Wanna hear something funny?
I ain’t got any money
I aint got nothing to sing today

Send me down that river of money
All the little fishes are swimming in the honey
honey

Tejas

A blue horizon’s all you see
Far cities fall below the sea
A broken leaf blows
Through your attic window
You light a cigarette
And dream about lost continents
And Texas
Will you ever see Texas?

In the morning at the end of time,
There’s cream beneath the quiet lights
Of Texas,
Will you ever see Texas?

When the lifeboats have all passed
You’ll follow on the ancient paths
To Texas
Will you ever see Texas?

Translucent armies flow behind you
Paper bridges wash away
Long red dresses and old blue suits
Fall beneath the Milky Waves
Of Texas
Will you ever see Texas?
